Video Games - January 2008

Mass Effect is the epic science fiction space opera from my hometown's best known developers, BioWare. It's a game that features enormous role playing environments, allowing you to seek out numerous planets and meet odd alien species.

It's doing reasonable sales, and it's gotten good reviews, with most people commending the dialogue in the game, saying that the character interactions were more interesting than the combat.

Fox News doesn't care about any of that. Fox News doesn't care about gameplay, or character development or plot or in-game morality or physics engines. No, what Fox News cares about is that there's a rumour of a filthy, dirty sex scene in the game.

A rauchy, disgusting, vile, demonic, evil act of lust. In a video game!

To enlighten us, the public, about the horrors of your children's video games, and the sneaky perversion that these games use to force your children to see hardcore pornography, Fox News Channel helpfully hosted a segment about Mass Effect and sex.

The segment is called "Sexbox" a portmanteau of 'sex' and 'Xbox'. Clever, eh? You'd think twice about buying it, I bet.

Watch the clip here on Kotaku!

The host of the segment has never played Mass Effect. None of the people on the panel have ever played the game, though that didn't stop them from demonizing it. Fox News also brought on pop psychology 'expert' Cooper Lawrence to comment on the game, which she's never played, either. Her comments were stale, stating that this game teaches men to treat women like objects, like something to be won.

Absolute garbage, and luckily, Fox invited Geoff Keighley from Spike TV to answer some questions about the game. His response to the fear sensationalism of Cooper Lawrence and the Fox team was that Fox's claims were grossly overexaggerated. After 30 hours of playing the game, you see a sex scene with the side of one boob and simulated sex, nothing worse than you'd see in a PG-13 movie. Lasting about 30 seconds. After talking and building up a relationship with that character.

Are you kidding me? This game seems like the PERFECT medium to give kids a positive message about relationship and the value of respect.

One of the best things to come out the gaming industry at the moment is the rueful brilliance of Ben Croshaw aka Yahtzee, a freelance reviewer/game designer who is the head of steam behind the really really popular Zero Punctuation reviews on The Escapist.

Check out his latest, a review of Crysis.

Last Scenario game RPG screenshot
The end of the year is a special moment in the house of gaming... it's a chance to look back at the year and reminisce about all the alien blood splattered on high-def walls, all the crates jumped, all the medipaks mysteriously absorbed.

The world of freeware games is exploding like a mushroom cloud... so many fantastic games are coming out that I simply don't have the time to play them all
