Game On - January 2007

The new action flick based on the comic series of Ghost Rider will be transformed into the gaming scene this February for the PS2, PSP and Xbox. Marvel Comics is having a joy ride with the amount of games making profits due to its popular franchise, and this new title will be no exception. Ghost Rider is famous for the fiery skull and motorcycle racing, where demons are fought and souls absorbed.

Ghost Rider will be set after the film’s ending, which is a good step in avoiding the ‘remake-of-the-film-game’ genre which has become a downfall in the gaming scene. Players familiar with the fighting style imposed in the Devil May Cry series will be at home with the controls in this title. Players will be able to pull off a range of combos and even a finisher move when attacking enemies. The motorcycle will also be in use which should add a variety playing style throughout the title.

Players will also be able to unlock Blade who is a half vampire and half human. Blade is a popular figure, and made a big impact on the movie screens with the trilogy of films. Moreover, Blade will have his own unique set of moves for players to dish out during the game. Multiplayer modes are also present with a racing mode an interesting components which will see players battle it off on tracks and in arenas. One disappointment with this title however is the fact that it isn’t on the new-gen consoles. This baffles me at the moment, but maybe we will see another installment of the title if the film is a big success.

The Godfather: Blackhand will be released on the Nintendo Wii this March and although it is essentially a re-release of the title available for the majority of ‘old-gen’ and ‘new-gen’ consoles, it does feature the innovative use of the Wii controller which makes the game unique in its own special way.

I have always been a fan of Namco’s Tekken series, but there has always been a fighter game which performs very well but was always in the shadows of the King of the Iron Fist. This title was Sega’s Virtua Fighter which has come a long way since we saw it on the Sega Saturn so long ago. This February, Sega will bring the newest and greatest episode of their fighter to the Xbox360 and PS3, and it is looking arcade-perfect.

Microsoft Game Studios are putting together an interesting shooter title named Shadowrun which will focus heavily on teamwork and tactics when players battle online in teams of 4-6. Players familiar with Counter-Stike will feel at home with the style of play amplified in this title, with an additional aspect of magical powers which makes this game quite different to the usual first person shooter gamers are used to.

WoW Burning Crusade out now!

January 17th 2007 08:36

All World Of Warcraft fans rejoice as Blizzard release their first major expansion for their record breaking and addictive MMORPG. With over 8million people worldwide subscribed to the online game where players ‘pay-to-play’ on a monthly basis, professionals at the game (and I use that term loosely) have much much more features to look forward to, including a flying mount, new glorious PvP arenas and very hard quests that will take more time away from what life such level ‘60’ gamers already have.

Hectic shooter from Capcom for Xbox360!

January 14th 2007 08:13

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, is Capcom’s latest hit for the Xbox360 and it packs a punch. Capcom has combined mindless shooting, aliens and glorious graphics in a planet covered in ice named E.D.N. III which is the human races’ next planet to conquer. In the process of dominating this planet, the human race is confronted with an alien-insect-like race called the Akrid. Moreover a bunch of ‘snow-pirates’ are also scavenging the planet and are humans who also pose as an enemy to the humans who are trying to conquer the planet (the gamer).

When I heard about this title I was so overjoyed! Since I am an avid fan of Resident Evil style survival horror games this title to me is a breakthrough in this genre of games which is dominated primarily by Capcom’s Resident Evil series and Konami’s Silent Hill series. Now Turtle Rock, the team which help developed the seriously addictive Counter-Strike: Source, has created a similar title but with online co-op play. This is a very interesting game concept which can see up to a team of 4 ‘un-infected’ challenge teams of ‘infected’ players.

Previously released on the Nintendo DS, Trauma Center is back on the Wii and this time continues to heavily use an interactive ‘point-and-click’ interface. This is an interesting game which sets players in an anime theme of playing a surgeon in an engaging storyline. Players will find themselves in a first person perspective making incisions, removing traumas and patching up their patient under a strict time limit and stress.

Frank Miller wrote an epic and violent novel about King Leonidas and his 300 soldiers who fought Xerxes and his Persian army. This graphic novel has been turned into a film which will be released early this year and Warner Bros. has also decided to create a game based on the film. At the moment this game is scheduled for release on the PSP around the time the film is released and it looks like a gruesome action orientated game.

Sony PSP owners were given a dose of the brilliant fighting game Tekken 5, named Dark Resurrection which was a re-release of the original game with additional features and modes. Playstation 3 owners (in Japan and Hong Kong at the moment) can download the game at approximately $16 to their hard disks (800mb) and unlock the additional in-game movies at an extra charge.
