All of em!…Metal Slug Anthology

October 31st 2006 11:14

Owners of Sony’s handheld console the PSP (along with the PS2 and Wii) will be in for a treat next month when SNK Playmore releases all the Metal Slug titles from 1 to 6 (6 being the latest release this year) in one little package. This is brilliant for sidescroller freaks and me being an avid fan of these types of shooter games, am very happy indeed!

For those unfamiliar with the Metal Slug series, the games essentially put players against hordes of enemies who are fought against in a 2D sidescroller platform. Players control military characters who can throw nades and shoot a variety of guns to take out their enemies (players can also control cute little tanks and aeroplanes too!). Network play is also available for PSP owners, with players being able to play side by side in gameplay.

On first site the game may look a tad ugly, but boy is it addictive! When I look at this title I see straightforward and uncomplicated gameplay which represents an awesome game. In comparative to similar titles such as Duke Nukem 1 and 2 and also pilot games like Raiden Fighters which have long passes, SNK still releases Metal Slug titles which I am happy to see (also shows that there is a strong fan base in existence!).

These games all wrapped up in a bargain bundle will sure be a blast and I recommend it to all. The only question is how strong are your fingers and thumbs…because this title has an awful amount of button bashing!

Reservoir Dogs…a total bomb of a game

October 29th 2006 11:40

Eidos Interactive has just released a game which had a good concept but has really let down fans and gamers alike of the cult classic film Reservoir Dogs. This title is intended to fill in the gaps of the film which saw a bunch of bank robbers turn against each other in a weird tale of trust and betrayal. I was never really fond of the film which left me confused from start to end (well sort of) and the same goes for the game which is available on Xbox, PS2 and the PC.

Play Mortal Kombat 3 online!

October 28th 2006 15:14

Yes the classic MK title has been re-released on the Xbox 360 for a budget price and noticeably with online play. Gamers of the series will be delighted to see Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in all its glory with full speed and fatalities. Single player modes will remain in tact for the game by Midway, but the multiplayer mode is where the game shines.

Sid Meier’s Railroads is a title which really places itself in competition with the Tycoon series of games where players take a management role in the construction of cities and in this case, railroad networks. This title reminds me heavily of the classic SimCity 2000 title I played when I was young, and it sure follows a similar structure for this day in age in the gaming scene.

Namco Bandai Games America, the creators of Cooking Mama for the Nintendo DS are bringing another catchy and quirky little title to the gaming scene which places the gamer in a sort-of… managerial position (so-to-speak) in Tamagotchi land. Tamagotchi was the wild craze which took the world around 9 year ago when gamers raised their own little pet in a handheld egg and Bandai (the creator of the Tamagotchi craze) is recycling the brand name in games this time around.

A while back I talked about Bully and whether or not it will even be released due to its violent nature and concept. Well behold, Rockstar has released Bully on the PS2 and it looks like a damn fine game (set aside the political ramifications and complaints that will shortly follow once the game begins to sell like hotcakes!). Having read reviews and watched trailers, this game has really hooked me.

I recently played and finished Scarface: Money Power Respect on the PSP and although I am an avid Scarface fan, I was quite disappointed with this title. Vivendi Games has essentially put together a mini-strategy game based loosely on the film where gamers take control of a block of land on the map and ‘build’ drug factories, hire thugs and dealers to generate income to eventually control the whole city. Players are rewarded with clips from the film as they progress through the game which is very simple and can be finished in a matter of hours.

This team to me is the ultimate in movies. I have seen plenty of HK and US action flicks created by John Woo, and I am always captured by the crazy and stunning fighting scenes which are filmed in such a unique way by John Woo. This time around, gamers will have the opportunity to ‘live’ the movie experience when John Woo brings Stranglehold to the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox360 early next year.

During lunch the other day, a friend of mine announced his pre-order of Nintendo’s Wii system and boosted of how the controlling scheme that will be used with games will surpass that used by Microsoft’s Xbox360 and Sony’s PS3 which use conventional methods. I being aware of his Nintendo fanboy mentality asked him to name one title which will blow the mind of gamers in general on the Wii…his reply was Red Steel.

Card fighting: SNK vs. Capcom!

October 11th 2006 12:21

SNK Playmore is bringing an interesting title to the Nintendo DS, titled SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters. This title is set to be released early next year and will host a wide range of characters from Capcom and SNK games in….card format! Don’t expect brutal one on one or group fighting, button mashing combos here but straight card slapping action!

Yes that’s correct, the game is set to be released on October the 17th and the hype has started (if it hasn’t already been for a long time). This is not necessary a sequel to Battlefield 2 which remains very popular online, but more of a new environment and atmosphere in the Battlefield franchise which is set just under 150 years into the future. As you would expect with such a date, the gameplay utilises futuristic weaponry and vehicles which will appease many gamers who love mechs!

LEGO Star Wars 2: awesome indeed

October 5th 2006 10:49

I have always loved the Star Wars series and even LEGO blocks which made my child life boredom quite non-existent (well helped to avoid it at least). Put those two together and you get a fine game created by Traveller’s Tales and released by LucasArts for all consoles. This title, as the name suggests is the second title in the LEGO Star Wars game and should really satisfy fans of the films.

Interesting and very popular, Guitar Hero will be landing on the Xbox360 some time early next year and will come with its own special controller for the Xbox360 to boot! This game was originally released exclusively to the Playstation 2 a while ago and Xbox360 owners will now be able to play Guitar Hero II, which is a straight port of the Playstation 2 version but with better graphics and additional tunes and features.
