Earthworm Jim returns!

August 31st 2006 12:22

Sweet as it sounds, Shiny is bringing Earthworm Jim to the Sony PSP and boy does it bring back memories. If you are too young to know of this title or just didn’t play the game at all in the past, Earthworm Jim is an earthworm with legs and arms and in a space suit. To boot, Jim also carries a light gun and can inflict a load of damage on all those who get in his path!

This time the game is remodelled in 3D with the same sidescroller element of the original. We will see Jim leaping ledges, climbing ropes and pulling off wild stunts….much like Indiana Jones but without the hat I really loved the animation and music found in the original when I played it a long long time ago and I hope this is repeated in this release. From what I can see, it looks like a remake of the original but don’t take my word 100% for it will be released in March next year (so there is still time for some new levels and characters to be implemented).

I am glad to see an upswing in gaming titles coming out these days with many companies opting for the ‘fun’ element in games…not all the eye candy which became the norm in selling games the past few years. One downside I can see is the re-release of classic titles. This is good for now, but sooner or later gamers will start to yawn. Nintendo avoided this problem with their release of the New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS which is becoming a smash! Let’s hope that Shiny will create a NEW Earthworm Jim title in the near future to satisfy old school gamers like myself!

Sega is at it again with the new Virtua Tennis 3 that will hit the PS3 and Xbox 360 next year. Tennis fans must be enjoying the increase in quality tennis games hitting our consoles, as I sure am (having played Top Spin on a regular basis for quite a while now!). Undoubtedly, Sega would have noticed the added competition set by Microsoft with Top Spin which plays very similarly to the Virtua Tennis games but with added improvements in graphics and gameplay.

RTS bliss: Command & Conquer 3

August 27th 2006 02:59

Next year EA Games is set to release the next instalment in the classic C&C real time strategy series with Tiberium Wars. The Brotherhood of Nod is pit against the ‘good’ GDI in another epic battle and this time EA has stepped back into the ‘old’ C&C set up. This includes full motion videos (FMVs) played out by real actors (as it was played back in the original C&C days) and the utilisation of tanks and classic weaponry – as opposed to laser rifles ..ergh

Joint Task Force (JTF) is an upcoming release by Sierra Entertainment and in my opinion looks like another military title running rounds like the classic Command and Conquer series. If you haven’t heard of this title yet, it is scheduled for release this September and places the player in strategic command of a group of characters who must accomplish missions (focusing on the real time strategy genre). Not only does this sound similar to the C & C type games but also the Commandoes titles which also had the same style of gameplay.

Rockstar Games is at it again, and this time the creators of the smash hit GTA series is releasing a Bully of a title for the PS2. But even before this title is released, outrage is being expressed by strong political leaders and even lawyers who wish to get their hands on the title. What do they wish to do these lawyers?...well sue the money making giant for releasing a game which is quite anti-social. Take-Two has already been burnt by the hot coffee scandal in GTA San Andreas and this title looks to follow the same road.

Play F.E.A.R online for FREE!

August 18th 2006 10:23

Yep hard to believe but true! Sierra are giving gamers the chance to download and play F.E.A.R Combat online without paying a cent (without owning the original). The catch? Well most probably the fact that this is the online component of the game without the epic single player campaign of the original title. None-the-less this free game is jammed with 19 maps, 12 weapons and 10 game modes supporting a full frenzy of online play.

Street Fighter II, the classic one on one fighting game released on arcade in 1991 has been re-released on the Xbox 360, and this time with a greater emphasis on online play. For those who are diehard Street Fighter fans, this edition of SF Hyper was actually released on the Sega Dreamcast some years ago (in the dieing days of the poor console) and it featured online mode! Yep, players could pit it out online many years ago…but not that many people did.

Looking at the games market at the moment, I see a lack of quality wrestling titles on gaming consoles (or information regarding the development of ones). The last title I played was WWE Reckoning 2 on my Nintendo Gamecube which was a very enjoyable game to say the least. The graphics were very fine and gameplay was addictive. It gave me memories of the days when I used to play WWF Warzone and Attitude on the Playstation 1, followed with WWF No Mercy on the Nintendo 64. Whilst gathered with my friends fights and arguments about who was double teaming who spun out of control and sometimes we took the game way to seriously! None the less, this is the type of game which is really rewarding.

Tony Hawk going downhill

August 11th 2006 09:02

…not in a bad way though! Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam is the next instalment in the Tony Hawk series and will feature on the handheld console, the Nintendo DS (just to name one) which plays similarly to its predecessors, but changes the flow of the game entirely. As the name states, this game will feature maps which are basically set in downhill motion.

Classic Japanese adventure: Okami

August 8th 2006 13:16

With an English release this September, Capcom is unleashing another title to its brilliant line of games and this time gamers will be treated to an epic action RPG game. Okami is truly a Japanese title as the storyline goes which takes place in Japanese mythology setting where the sun goddess Amaterasu (the main character controlled by the character) is pit into battle against Orochi, a demon with many heads that is imposing pain and destruction on villagers in its path.

Using the CS Source engine, publisher Mindscape is set to release an innovative and addictive title on the PC by the name of The Ship. This is no ordinary game with prime gameplay set online between players on a ship (as suggested by the title) where players are assigned a person whom they must kill whilst trying to avoid being killed by another person who has them on their hit list. The ship is set in the classic 1920’s design where there are narrow walkways and nicely decorated sleeping rooms (reminds my of the Orient Express atmosphere).

Crysis may be a crisis to play

August 1st 2006 09:57

cheduled for release late this year, EA Games along with game developer Crytek will be releasing Crysis a first person shooter for the PC and next-gen consoles PS3 and Xbox 360. For those unfamiliar with the developer; Crytek was the team behind the smash hit Farcry which was released on the PC and Xbox over the past few years. Farcry was a very popular and rewarding FPS, with similar traits from the game following through to Crysis.
