Video Games - July 2006

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is set to star in the new Spy Hunter game Nowhere to Run which will land on the PS2 and Xbox this September. For those unfamiliar with The Rock, this character was a popular wrestler in the WWE (World Wrestling Federation) some odd years ago. After realising his stardom and reputation Hollywood jumped in and took The Rock into a series of action packed films including The Scorpion King and Walking Tall. Now gamers can play as The Rock in this new action packed title with the voice and appearance of The Rock genuinely in tact for this title.

The main gameplay follows The Rock as he attempts to retrieve his stolen ‘wonder-mobile’ (actually called the Interceptor…but it sure does wonders), blow up some baddies and rescue some hostages. The life of a hero can be tiresome, however players will be given the chance not only to use weapons such as guns and projectiles, but can actually pull off wrestling moves in The Rock fashion. Wresting and The Rock fans out there will sure be happy with this addition to the game.

Although players will move around maps on foot (similar to the Tomb Raider games), The Rock will also be able to control the Interceptor which is essentially a vehicle which can transform into a boat or motorbike and can fire a variety of weapons (think of a James Bond car on steroids). This follows the Spy Hunter theme and will surely put a mix into the gameplay.

This should be an interesting title with a star name on the advertising pitch (which is surely to attract fans of wrestling and The Rock alike). While the premise of the game in driving a powerful no-nonsense car and being the hero of the day is entertaining, it has been done time and time again. This title may or may not become a flop but it is also rumoured that The Rock may star in a Spy Hunter movie which raises concerns about wether this game will tie in with the movie for profits sake…arghh not another one.

Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is set to be released on the DS this September and is no ordinary sports game. As you can tell by the title, this Nintendo title is a basketball game with the Mario world touch! Interestingly enough it was developed by Square Enix the company behind the great Final Fantasy series that has set the standard for the RPG scene on all consoles.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins reborn!

July 25th 2006 15:05

Who would of believed that Capcom would bring this title back to life in classic 2D format for the PSP. Yes that’s correct, if you are old enough to remember (I know I am) Ghosts ‘n Goblins was a smash hit when it was released in 1985 as an arcade title and on the NES. The title resurfaced onto the Gameboy in the year 2000, followed by a PS2 title in Maximo: Ghosts to Glory which followed a similar flow to the classic title but in 3D.

Yep, finally a proper RPG game to land on the DS and from none other than the RPG giants Square Enix. Funny to see a once Sony exclusive series (well it was originally on the Gameboy a long long time ago before the almighty title FF7) on another console and that of Nintendo. This time around, Square Enix will be bring FF3 to the DS in 3-D format, showing the punch that the DS has.

GTA rip off? = Saints Row

July 22nd 2006 18:11

On its way to the Xbox 360 next month, THQ is releasing what seems to be a GTA clone. Players begin the game by creating their character from head to toe, including jewellery and clothing and are placed within a large city which is unbelievably controlled by racially segregated gangs. Deja vu anyone? Take-two released Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (and the other GTA series) a while ago which basically followed the same gameplay that this game produces.

This title is comprised of a collection of mini-games which essentially waste your time. Players are given a range of jobs in which they must solve puzzles, press certain button combinations or count images within certain time frames and at certain speeds. As the difficulty increases, so does the speed and the amount of items the player must retrieve or kill.

Big Brain Academy is an original and interesting Nintendo DS game which utilises the stylus and the touch sensitive screen of the DS and tests the player’s reaction and thinking skills within a limited time frame. Essentially, the game is full of brainteasers which start at a simple level and eventually reach an advanced level of difficulty. As you progress within the game, you will be given a final score as your ‘brain pattern’ is calculated.

Gran Turismo…the motorbike way

July 8th 2006 07:20

The creators of the Gran Turismo series are back again, but this time with a motorcycle simulation named Tourist Trophy. The game solely revolves around motorcycle racing with two main modes of play; arcade and Tourist mode. Arcade allows the player to jump straight into the action and choose a bike from a range of brands including Yamaha and Suzuki and hit the track immediately. Tourist mode however starts the player with a small amount of bikes, with the ability to win more bikes as the player progresses.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response is a new first person shooter for the PS2 and Xbox and it sure is violent. The gameplay follows an ex-marine Nick Mason who is placed in a police division in response to an outbreak of riots in the city. Nick has a large array of weaponry including pistols, riot shields and even nail bombs (to name a few). Players will go through the city hunting down gangs and their leaders using any violent tactic that is necessary (ahem head shots limbs being blown off are quite common).

Capcom are set to release the gruesome and comical Dead Rising for the Xbox 360 this September. The main character Frank West is a photo journalist who has been informed that a big event is occurring in Willamette Parkview Mall (a typical American shopping centre). Rushing down to the scene, the mall is filled with a mass of mindless zombies and it is Frank’s job to take pictures of the zombies (and destroy any that get in his way).
